World-Class Mandolinist Radim Zenkl Benefits SHOR

United States National Mandolin Champion Radim Zenkl will play a solo concert to benefit SHOR (Sojourner’s House on the Ridge) Homeless on Tuesday, July 17th at 7:30 p.m. at the Norton Buffalo Hall. Zenkl will play original music crossing the tracks of folk, jazz, new age, bluegrass, flamenco, gypsy, Irish, and classical music, combined with Czech and eastern European traditional songs and instrumentals. Paradise Community Guilds is a co-sponsor of the event, and opening will be the musical duo of Susan Dobra and John-Michael Sun. All proceeds will benefit members of the Paradise community who are currently homeless or at risk of homelessness. Radim has extended the technical possibilities of the mandolin by inventing a masterful technique, the "Zenkl style," in which a single mandolin sounds like two. Multiinstrumentalist Jerry Garcia has called Zenkl, “Imaginative and great!” and mandolinist David Grisman says, ““Radim has reinvented the mandolin in several different ways.” Bela Fleck, also a multi-talented instrumentalist who has played multiple times at Laxson Auditorium, says Radim has “excellent technique and lots of great ideas!” The SHOR Support Center which recently moved to the former CareNet building at 6189 Clark Road, is open Monday through Thursday from 12 noon–4 pm and provides a multitude of services for any Ridge resident who is homeless or at risk of homelessness. Supportive services include daytime shelter, basic hygienic items, clothing, business services (computer, phone, fax, and mail), case management to connect with area services such as the Employment Development Department, Butte County Behavioral Health, and the Chico Veterans Resource Center, as well as to housing services to assist with transitional and permanent housing. .
