The concept for No Word for "Art" came from Hmong-American artist and co-curator, Elizabeth Lee. There is no word for "art" in the Hmong language, which can make it difficult to explain what fine art is to older Hmong generations. Many Hmong-American youth are discouraged from creative careers by the older members of the family. As a society, how do we value art? This exhibition will explore the complexities of Hmong-American identity from the perspective of artists throughout the north state, and provide opportunities for conversations regarding the significance of art.
