Every ten years, supervisorial districts must be redrawn so that each district is substantially equal in population. This process, called redistricting, is important in ensuring that each board member represents about the same number of constituents. The 2021 Butte County Supervisorial Redistricting process has begun and must be completed by December 15, 2021.
Redistricting determines which neighborhoods and communities are grouped together into a district for purposes of electing a board member to represent their desires. In Butte County, the Board of Supervisors is responsible for adopting supervisorial districts, and is seeking public input in selecting the next district map. Redistricting will be based on final data from the U.S. Census, expected to be released in September. The preliminary data (referred to as the “legacy data”) is available now.
Butte County residents are encouraged to take part in the redistricting process, and will have opportunities to share their thoughts regarding how district boundaries should be drawn to best represent their community.
More information regarding the redistricting process, including a map drawing tool which can be used to submit communities of interest or draft districts, as well as an email comment form is available online at www.ButteCounty.net/Redistricting.
