2022 Donkey Derby

Welcome to the 2022 Donkey Derby, located at the Magalia Community Church in Magalia, CA. This family fun event, celebrating the discovery and transport of the 54lb Gold Nugget in 1859, is one of the most endearing events of the Gold Nugget Days events. Watch our well cared for, yet crazily stubborn pack animals move the nugget from its discovery at the Willard Mine to the Magalia Community Church with fanfare and a whole lot of encouragement from their handlers and the crowd. Purchase your commemorative badge and share in the fun! Breakfast will be available, provided by the Magalia Community Church for a paltry fee. Onlookers are encouraged to attend from 8:30 to 9am on Saturday, April 23rd to await the arrival of the first packers coming up the ridge. Bring a chair and get ready to “hoot and holler!” When the Donkey Derby concludes, join Jezebelle, the Bar Float, and world famous Drill Team in the Gold Nugget Days Parade.
